Self-Awareness
This course is an interactive class working on interpersonal communication skills. It begins by looking at the changes and challenges of adolescence. It explores the skill of empathy and it's role in relationships. It addresses building ones self confidence and how it relates to relationships. The communication skills of listening, providing proper feedback, asking questions, and understanding body language impact relationships. Further, the course explores the skill of responsibility, managing emotions, improving friendships, resisting negative peer pressure, decision making, bullying, dealing with difficult people and solving conflicts.
7th Grade FACS
Family and Consumer Science 7 course begins with understanding laundry basics and good consumerism in clothing purchases. It goes onto simple clothing repairs through hand stitching followed by learning how fabrics are made. It addresses understanding the messages behind clothes and understanding the principals of design in clothing. While learning to operate a sewing machine, students will follow technical directions in using a sewing machine and constructing and evaluating a project. In the later part of the quarter students will develop and awareness of children ages zero through six, their social, emotional, intellectual, and physical differences and needs. Further they will gain an understanding of how to be an encourager and helper of children through praise and healthy discipline. They will leave with a developed plan of activities to engage children in while child sitting.
Career Investigation
This course explores careers and looks at the world of work. It includes taking assessment inventories, researching and exploring careers, and establishing a plan for a career. Further, the course works on how to find and apply for jobs, creating a cover letter and resume. It addresses and works on employability skills. Lastly, financial management is addressed.
Reading 8
Reading classes are designed to help students read smoothly, and fluently, with expression, understanding, enjoyment and ease, thereby increasing learning performance. Classes address objectives that students commonly encounter on standardized tests. Lessons help readers develop reading and thinking skills in order to meet the elements of the Career and College Readiness Core Standards for Minnesota Language Arts Academic Standards. Students are using multimodal media to read different types of print in literature and informational text.
